National campaign urges year round farm safety awareness

Canadian Agricultural Safety Week will take place from March 15 to 21, encouraging farmers, farm families, agricultural workers, and rural communities to make farm safety a daily priority. The annual campaign promotes the message of #FarmSafetyEveryday and reminds everyone that safety is essential to successful farming operations.

“While we know the agricultural industry is one of the most hazardous in which to work, that does not mean we should just accept those risks. Instead, we need to address them with preventative measures,” said Sandra Miller, CASA’s Executive Director.

Data from Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting shows that between 1990 and 2020, there were 2,814 agriculture related deaths in Canada. These numbers highlight the serious hazards faced by those working in the agricultural sector. Farm work often involves heavy machinery, livestock handling, road travel, working with grain bins, and long working hours, all of which can increase risk.

“Any life lost to a preventable farming accident is one too many. That is why CASA is dedicated to supporting initiatives, like Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, to empower producers, their families, and their workers to make farms safer places to live, work, and visit,” said Miller.

“Canadian Agricultural Safety Week not only helps highlight the importance of safety in agriculture but also underscores the need for and importance of a year-round focus on farm safety. Because safer farms benefit all Canadians,” said Miller.

In 2026, the week will feature daily themes focusing on key safety topics. These include machinery safety, emergency preparedness, rail and road safety, livestock safety, and the role of women in agriculture. The campaign encourages open discussions about health and safety practices throughout the year, not only during one week in March.

The initiative is supported by several industry sponsors and funded in part through national agricultural partnerships. Educational resources, safety advice, and media materials are available online to help farming communities build safer environments for living and working.

No one expects tragedy on a routine drive home. But for farmers across New York, that is a daily fear.

In this emotional video, Joseph Tyler of El-Vi Farms, opens up about how this moment forever changed his family’s life. Farmers are so much more than their equipment. They have parents, siblings, children and friends anxiously waiting at home each night for their loved ones to walk through the door.

Before you pass a tractor or become frustrated behind a slow moving vehicle, we urge you to think of the people inside. Please, slow down and share the road responsibly so we can keep everyone safe.
