National agriculture safety campaign promotes year-round farm safety and injury prevention
Agriculture plays an important role in Canada’s economy and food system, but it also remains one of the most hazardous industries. According to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data, 2,814 agriculture-related fatalities were recorded in Canada between 1990 and 2020. These numbers highlight the importance of improving safety awareness and adopting preventive measures on farms.
Industry leaders stress that risks in agriculture should not simply be accepted as part of the job. Instead, safety experts encourage producers, workers, and farm families to focus on practical solutions that reduce hazards and protect lives. Preventive action, proper training, and regular safety checks are key steps that can help lower accident rates.
Canadian Agricultural Safety Week takes place March 15–21 and serves as a national reminder to make farm safety a daily priority. The annual initiative is delivered by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association and focuses on promoting safe agricultural practices. Through education and awareness, the campaign encourages farming communities to adopt habits that support safer working and living environments.
The initiative highlights that farm safety is not limited to one week of activities. Organizers emphasize the importance of maintaining safety awareness throughout the year. By following safety guidelines, using equipment properly, and encouraging open communication about risks, farms can reduce preventable injuries and create safer workplaces for everyone involved.
“While we know the agricultural industry is one of the most hazardous in which to work, that does not mean we should just accept those risks. Instead, we need to address them with preventative measures,” said Sandra Miller, CASA’s Executive Director.
“Any life lost to a preventable farming accident is one too many. That is why CASA is dedicated to supporting initiatives, like Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, to empower producers, their families, and their workers to make farms safer places to live, work, and visit. Canadian Agricultural Safety Week not only helps highlight the importance of safety in agriculture but also underscores the need for and importance of a year-round focus on farm safety. Because safer farms benefit all Canadians.”
The campaign also reinforces that, safer farms benefit not only producers but also families, workers, and visitors. Building a strong culture of safety helps improve productivity, supports sustainability, and protect future generations involved in agriculture.
As Canadian Agricultural Safety Week approaches, farmers and rural communities are encouraged to review their safety plans, identify potential hazards, and commit to everyday safety practices. Continued awareness and shared responsibility remain essential in reducing farm-related injuries and ensuring that agriculture remains both productive and safe for all.
