Federal Minister of Agriculture Lawrence MacAulay recently announced his newest appointment to the Canada Agricultural Review Tribunal.

Geneviève Parent, a full professor in Université Laval’s Faculty of Law, will join the tribunal for three years.

The tribunal is an independent and impartial body established by the Government of Canada to review notices of violation issued by federal agencies regulating agriculture and food.

At Université Laval, Parent holds the Legal Research Chair in Food Diversity and Security. Her areas of interest include food security, national and international agri-food law.

Minister MacAulay is optimistic Parent’s qualifications make her a perfect fit for the tribunal.

“I am confident Ms. Parent’s experience and knowledge of food security and agri-food law will greatly benefit the Tribunal in its vital role protecting the health and well-being of consumers and the economic vibrancy of Canadian agri-food industries,” he said in an August 18 release.

The Tribunal has ruled on 17 different issues in 2017, ranging from a dismissed violation surrounding cattle being transported without the proper Canadian Cattle Identification Agency ear tags, to upholding a fine because someone failed to properly declare that they were bringing meat into Canada.

Parent’s appointment to the Canada Agricultural Review Tribunal is the second made by Minister MacAulay in 2017.

In June, he appointed Luc Bélanger as its Chairperson. He will remain in that position for five years.
