Free, confidential mental health support to Canadian farmers

A new mental health initiative is now available for Canadian farmers, farm families, and agricultural workers. The National Farmer Wellness Network (NFWN) Crisis Line, 1-866-FARMS01 (1-866-327-6701), offers confidential and specialized mental health support tailored to the unique challenges of farming life.

This initiative, launched by the Canadian Centre for Agricultural Wellbeing (CCAW), is supported by a $1.5 million investment from Farm Credit Canada (FCC) over three years.

Agriculture is a demanding profession that often comes with financial stress, isolation, and emotional strain. Farmers must manage unpredictable weather, market fluctuations, and the constant responsibility of caring for crops and livestock. These factors can significantly impact mental well-being, making access to tailored support essential.

The NFWN Crisis Line bridges this gap by offering immediate assistance from licensed mental health professionals. These experts are trained through the Canadian Agricultural Literacy Program (CALP), ensuring they understand the unique pressures of the farming industry. The helpline provides a secure, confidential space for farmers to discuss their concerns and receive guidance during difficult times.

CCAW has been working since 2022 to improve access to mental health services for those in agriculture. The launch of this crisis line is a significant step toward ensuring continuous support for farmers across the country. With FCC’s investment, the initiative strengthens mental health resources in rural communities and addresses key barriers such as stigma and geographic isolation.

FCC recognizes that while farming brings many rewards, it also comes with significant stressors. By supporting this initiative, FCC aims to ensure that farmers have access to the mental health resources they need.
