OPA says it remains committed to the 2027 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo despite reports that Lambton's volunteer committee has withdrawn from hosting the event.

The Ontario Plowmen's Association (OPA) says it remains fully committed to hosting the 2027 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) in Lambton County, despite recent reports that the local volunteer committee has withdrawn from the event following unsuccessful negotiations with the provincial organization.

In a statement released following media coverage of the situation, the OPA emphasized the significance of the International Plowing Match as one of Ontario's most enduring agricultural traditions and expressed its intention to continue working with local stakeholders to find a path forward.

The organization noted that the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo has been a fixture of Ontario agriculture since 1913 and has only been interrupted during periods of global conflict and public health emergencies. Beyond its agricultural heritage, the event is widely recognized for its economic impact on host communities, attracting visitors, exhibitors, sponsors, and agricultural organizations from across Ontario and beyond.

According to the OPA, preparations for the 2027 event have involved ongoing engagement with committees, farmers, community leaders, and local partners since Lambton County's bid was first submitted in the spring of 2025. Association leadership said it continues to view the region as an ideal host community for the event.

The organization also highlighted the historical economic benefits generated by previous matches. The last International Plowing Match hosted in Lambton County took place in 1991. The OPA said proceeds and legacy initiatives from that event have contributed more than $150,000 in scholarships for local students over the years, demonstrating the long-term value such events can deliver to rural communities.

In its statement, the OPA expressed disappointment that the recent announcement regarding the withdrawal of the local volunteer committee occurred before direct discussions had taken place with the association's board.

The organization said matters involving the partnership between local and provincial organizers are best addressed through open communication and collaboration.

Despite the challenges, the OPA indicated it remains committed to preserving the partnership and continuing discussions with those involved in the 2027 event. Association officials said they intend to meet with stakeholders in the coming weeks, including members of the local committee, sponsors, partners, and community representatives, to identify solutions and determine the best path forward.

The board also pointed to positive feedback received from local residents who support bringing the International Plowing Match back to Lambton County. The organization believes strong community interest remains and hopes that continued dialogue will help resolve outstanding concerns.

At the centre of the association's message is a desire to protect the legacy and reputation of an event that has been part of Ontario's agricultural landscape for more than a century. The OPA said its focus is on addressing issues constructively, making decisions that benefit the community, and ensuring that plans for the 2027 International Plowing Match continue to advance.

While questions remain regarding the future structure of the organizing partnership, the Ontario Plowmen's Association maintains that it is committed to hosting the 2027 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in Lambton County and will continue discussions with stakeholders as planning efforts move ahead.

Meanwhile, there are less than 75 days until the 2026 International Plowing Match & Rural Expo (IPM), which will take place Tuesday, September 22 to Saturday, September 26, 2026 in Walkerton, Ontario.
