State Offers $340K To Grow Specialty Crop Programs
The Delaware Department of Agriculture has announced new funding for projects that support specialty crop development. A total of $340,000 is available for 2025 through the federal Farm Bill.
Specialty crops include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, nursery plants, horticulture, dried fruits, and floriculture. This grant program does not fund projects related to corn, soybeans, or animal agriculture.
Applicants may request between $5,000 and $75,000 for projects running one to three years. Qualified applicants include farmers, nonprofits, government bodies, educational institutions, and companies based in or affiliated with Delaware.
All proposals should demonstrate measurable benefits to the specialty crop sector. Previously funded projects have involved improving crop varieties, reducing wildlife damage, expanding local markets, and community farming programs.
Unlike prior years, the application period is shorter. Proposals must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. (EST) on June 24, 2025. Officials noted, “We appreciate the challenge this short turnaround may create, but it’s needed to meet USDA timelines for this year’s grants.”
A review team will assess the proposals, and selected projects will be included in Delaware’s State Plan submitted to the USDA.
