U.S. leads fight on global deforestation

New policy targets sustainable practices

The Administration has introduced a comprehensive policy framework aimed at combating demand-driven illegal deforestation. This approach focuses on reducing the importation of deforestation-linked agricultural commodities and supporting global efforts to reverse deforestation by 2030.

The framework outlines six strategic elements, including prioritizing commodities tied to illegal deforestation, utilizing Earth-observation data, and collaborating with private sector investments in supply chain transparency.

By aligning these policies with the U.S. Lacey Act, the framework emphasizes targeting high-risk areas while minimizing unnecessary compliance burdens.

"Reducing illegal deforestation globally requires innovative approaches and collaboration across sectors," stated the Administration.

Efforts will include engaging with governments and communities to enhance sustainable forest management and enforcing anti-deforestation laws.

Key priorities include leveraging advanced technologies for deforestation monitoring, supporting local capacity-building programs, and promoting sustainable land use.

The United States aims to work with national and regional partners to implement effective governance systems and reduce the environmental impact of global supply chains.

This initiative is part of broader U.S. efforts to align domestic and international policies with sustainable practices. The framework ensures coordinated efforts between civil society, the private sector, and research institutions to protect forests and promote sustainable agriculture.
