By , Farms.com

The renowned Calgary Bull Sale opens its doors on Wednesday. The two-day event running from March 6th to 7th is considered the longest-running consignment bull sale in the world. It’s expected to attract 500 cattle ranchers from mostly Western Canada and the United States.

In its 113th year, the event is being held at the Stampede grounds - Wednesday features the show and Thursday is the sale portion of the event. The breads sold include: Angus, Simmental, Gelbvieh, and Herford bulls.

The industry is hoping for record sales this year, as last year the sale saw the highest prices in over a decade, with the average bull selling for $5,726.

The high-profile event serves as a benchmark for other bull sales that will take place across the Prairies this year.
