4-H Clubs Win for Sustainable Farming

4-H Canada and Syngenta Canada have announced the winners of the first-ever AgriFood Challenge, a national initiative that encouraged 4-H members to support sustainable agriculture and food security through creative, community-focused projects.

Young members from 4-H clubs across the country took part in this challenge, applying hands-on learning and teamwork to address key agricultural and food-related issues. The participants tackled real-world problems such as food waste and food insecurity, often resulting in meaningful contributions to their communities. Projects included donations to local food banks, community education events, and awareness campaigns about sustainable practices.

Some members created pollinator gardens to promote biodiversity, while others focused on increasing knowledge about agriculture and sustainability through engaging presentations and campaigns. The challenge showcased the strong commitment of 4-H youth to improving their communities and contributing to a more sustainable future.

“4-H youth have always led the way in creating real change,” said Hugh Maynard, Interim CEO for 4-H Canada. “We're very grateful to Syngenta Canada for partnering with us to empower our youth members to take on the important topics of sustainable agriculture and food security.”

This year, up to 15 winners received $500 each to support their clubs and further their community efforts. Entries were judged on several criteria, including the impact of the project, youth involvement, community outreach, and insights gained during the experience.

"We applaud this year's AgriFood Challenge winners for their innovative contributions to sustainable agriculture and food security," said Christina Stroud, Head of Corporate Affairs at Syngenta Canada. "This latest outreach initiative aligns perfectly with our commitments to empower youth, alleviate rural hunger, and promote sustainable farming practices."

Congratulations to the clubs from British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island for their outstanding work in the 2024 AgriFood Challenge.
