16th Annual Central Texas Stocker Cattle Program Set for June 24 in West

Hosted by the AgriLife Extension beef and forage committees in Bell, Bosque, Coryell, Falls, Hill, Limestone and McLennan counties, the program allows participants to hear the latest updates on the stocker cattle industry from agency and local experts. 

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the West Auction Barn, 20645 Interstate 35 N. Frontage Road, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. A vendor showcase will be available throughout the day. 

The registration fee is $20. Breakfast will be provided by AgTrust Farm Credit, and a steak lunch will be included. Attendees must register by June 19 by contacting the AgriLife Extension office at McLennan County at 254-757-5180 or emailing s-mclellan@tamu.edu

One Texas Department of Agriculture integrated pest management continuing education unit will be available.

  • New World Screwworm Update — Sonja Swiger, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension entomologist and professor, Department of Entomology, Stephenville. 
  • Chute-Side Stocker Cattle Processing — Jared Ranly, DVM, Ranly Veterinary Services, Lott. 
  • Be Aware: Online Marketplace Scams — Marvin Wills, special ranger, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, Gatesville.

Meet the guests: Dr. Anna Johnson / anna-johnson-05028a14 is the Morrill Professor of Animal Behavior and Welfare at Iowa State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Animal Sciences from Texas Tech University and completed her master's degree in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare at the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on practical solutions that improve farm animal welfare, including sow productive lifetime, animal-human interaction, environmental enrichment, and Precision Livestock Farming.

Emma Coursey / emma-coursey-183810241 is pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine after earning a bachelor's degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University. Her academic interests include swine health, production, and animal welfare, with research experience evaluating welfare resources in commercial finishing pigs.
