20 aspiring agriculturalists named as USDA's future leaders 2024

The USDA has proudly announced the 2024 cohort of the Future Leaders in Agriculture program, selecting 20 bright students from an array of backgrounds. This initiative reflects the USDA's commitment to fostering a diverse and innovative future for American agriculture.

Embracing students from land-grant universities and Hispanic-serving institutions, the program aligns with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's vision of an agricultural workforce as diverse as the nation itself. It attracts students from fields like business, economics, communications, nutrition, and food science, who are already demonstrating leadership in their academic and community circles.

Participants were chosen based on their insightful essays on pressing agricultural topics. Undergraduates examined the appeal of agriculture as a career choice, while graduate students delved into the challenges agriculture will face in the next five years.

The selected students will be treated to a unique educational experience in Washington, D.C., where they will visit key locations, attend the Agricultural Outlook Forum, and participate in exclusive USDA briefings. This opportunity not only broadens their understanding of national agricultural policies but also enhances their career prospects.

This initiative, supported collaboratively by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Farm Credit, and USDA agencies, is pivotal in shaping the leaders who will steer the agricultural sector towards sustainability and innovation. The Future Leaders in Agriculture Program stands as a beacon of hope and progress in the ever-evolving world of agriculture.
