Agriculture Canada expecting more canola crops this spring

Agriculture Canada is forecasting prairie farmers will seed more canola and wheat and less pulse crops this spring.

The forecast calls for an increase of almost one million acres of wheat this year.

FarmLink Marketing Solutions analyst Neil Townsend said the sizable reduction in pulse crops is due to stiff tariffs in India, a key market for Saskatchewan farmers.

“Definitely we think pulses are going to be impacted by the economic, prices and entire India situation,” Townsend said.

‘That being said, I mean the dryer it is people might plant a little bit more lentils than they might otherwise, just because it is a bit of a more tolerant crop,” Townsend added.
