Agriculture Secretary Applauds India's Tariff Reduction on Agricultural Products

Tom Vilsack, the secretary of agriculture for the United States, has expressed gratitude for India's decision to lower its retaliatory tariffs on a few agricultural exports. This move is expected to create new opportunities and expand market access for American farmers. The announcement was made by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR).

Vilsack hailed the removal of these tariffs as a positive development, highlighting the efforts of USDA and USTR under the Administration to secure $15 billion in new or preserved market access for agricultural products. This decision will enable producers to boost sales of items such as apples, chickpeas, lentils, almonds, and walnuts to India, which stands as one of the United States' prominent trading partners.

The Agriculture Secretary commended the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative for their diligent work in negotiating this agreement and for their leadership in strengthening the bilateral relationship with India. He underscored the competitiveness of American food and agriculture products, which have witnessed record-breaking export levels in recent years.

The Administration remains committed to prioritizing the exploration of new and improved markets for American agriculture, aiming to create favorable economic prospects for workers and families.
