Alberta Pork Weekly Report

Bill C-282, An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management), is a private member’s bill that has been passed in the House of Commons and is currently being read in the Senate. The main premise of the bill is to protect supply-managed commodities when it comes to trade negotiations.

While Canada’s system of supply management already offers protections for some commodities, Bill C-282 threatens to make them non-negotiable elements of trade discussions, which could negatively impact the majority of Canada's agri-food products, which are non-supply-managed and rely on trade, such as pork.

Alberta Pork opposes Bill C-282 and will continue to provide information to producers and our partners if the bill becomes law. Read more on the issue.
