Research rooted in the practical questions facing beef producers has earned University of Saskatchewan professor Bart Lardner one of the Canadian beef industry’s top honours.
Lardner received the 2026 Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation Aug. 19 during the Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Winnipeg.
WHY IT MATTERS: Lardner’s applied research has helped beef producers extend grazing seasons, improve cattle performance and reduce production costs.
The award recognizes researchers whose work advances the competitiveness and sustainability of Canada’s beef industry while demonstrating leadership, collaboration and mentorship.
The Beef Cattle Research Council has presented the award on behalf of Canada’s beef industry since 2015.
Lardner said his interest in agriculture began while growing up on farms in British Columbia’s Okanagan and Peace River regions. Nearly 30 years of research have not changed where he looks for direction.
“I get most of my ideas just talking to you producers out in the field or on the road or in a workshop,” he said while accepting the award.
Lardner is a professor in the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Agriculture and Bioresources. He’s also the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Strategic Research Program Chair in Cow-Calf and Forage Systems.
