Beef Industry Remains Unchanged in the Last Six Years

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association held their AGM this week in Regina, and producers received a cattle market outlook from Cattle Trends president Anne Wasko.

She says the U-S beef herd has been undergoing an aggressive expansion phase since the drought of 2012-13, but the same has not held true in Canada.

"As we sit today, the numbers are pretty much the same in Western Canada. In Alberta and Saskatchewan, the numbers range from 2.7 and 2.8 million beef cows for the last six years in a row," she said.

Wasko says it's hard to determine what's causing cattle numbers to stay flat over the last few years, but believes it could be attributed to dry weather and producers exiting the business.
