Boosting soybean profitability - USB's major infrastructure moves

The United Soybean Board (USB) is at the forefront of transforming the U.S. soybean industry through strategic infrastructure investments. By financing essential feasibility studies via the soy checkoff, the USB has championed projects like the Mississippi River dredging in Louisiana and the expansion of the Port of Grays Harbor in Washington. These endeavors are set to substantially boost the profitability and global reach of U.S. soybean growers.

Belinda Burrier, a Maryland farmer and USB Director, underscores the intention behind these investments - to position U.S. soybean growers favorably in the international arena. She highlights the vital role of infrastructure in sustaining the industry's global leadership, a topic she will expand upon at the upcoming National Association of Farm Broadcasting convention.

These infrastructure projects are not just ambitious but also financially sound. The dredging of the Mississippi River is expected to add an extra 500,000 bushels per vessel, translating into an estimated annual increase of $461 million for U.S. soybean farmers. The expansion of Grays Harbor's Terminal 4 will equally amplify soybean meal exports to key markets in Asia and the Pacific.

The St. Lawrence Seaway project, which has halved freight tolls, is another testament to USB's commitment to enhancing soybean export efficiency. This move is particularly significant for diversifying export channels and maximizing returns for soybean farmers. Burrier points to an impressive return of $12.34 for every dollar invested, a clear indicator of these projects' success.

USB Chair Meagan Kaiser, also a Missouri farmer, points out the larger impact of such initiatives. She envisions that these collaborative efforts can lead to substantial upgrades in the nation's infrastructure, benefiting not just soybeans but all agricultural commodities. Ultimately, the United Soybean Board's commitment to enriching the soybean industry is evident in these calculated, forward-thinking infrastructure investments.
