Canadian producers made relatively little change to their spring corn and soybean planting plans.
According to Friday’s Statistics Canada acreage report, producers planted 3.732 million acres to corn this year, down only slightly from March intentions of 3.769 million but still up 2.2% on the year. Meanwhile, national soybean area, at 5.736 million acres, climbed slightly from March intentions of 5.635 million but remained near the 5.709 million acres planted in 2024.
In the primary production province of Ontario, corn planted area was reported at 2.223 million acres, versus intentions of 2.265 million and 2.157 million last year. Soybean area in the province was also little changed, up slightly to 2.888 million acres from intentions of 2.876 million. That is down 7.4% from one year earlier, but roughly in line with the five-year average.
Manitoba corn area increased to 543,200 acres from intentions of 527,900 and further above last year’s 504,600 acres. If accurate, it would be the second highest corn acreage for Manitoba on record, trailing only the 553,900 acres planted in 2023. At 1.611 million acres, soybean area in the province was close to intentions of 1.626 million, up from 1.425 million last year and the highest since 2018 at 1.89 million.
At 854,600 acres, estimated Quebec corn area eased from intentions of 876,000 and fell below last year’s 879,000. Soybean area in the province, at 1.081 million acres, rose from intentions of 985,600 and narrowly topped the 1.036 million planted in 2024.
