Educators at the Centre: ESC Pilot Year Sets the Stage for Growth

This year marked the pilot of Agriculture in the Classroom - Manitoba (AITC-M) Educator Steering Committee (ESC), a small but mighty group of five Manitoba educators who brought energy, insight, and a passion for meaningful classroom learning to the heart of our programming.

The ESC was created to ensure educators have a direct voice in how AITC-M programs and resources are shaped. From classroom-tested feedback to direction in best-practices for teacher support, to creative ideas for engaging students, the committee’s input was felt across the organization, and the results are already making a difference.

At the wrap-up meeting held this summer, the sense of momentum was clear. Members reflected on the value of the pilot year and expressed excitement for what’s ahead. Here are some key takeaways:

  • The foundation is strong. The structure is built and ready to grow.
  • The feedback is working. Educator insights are already influencing next steps in programming and classroom tools.
  • The vision is big. Members are eager to expand the ESC and bring more diverse voices to the table.
  • The value is real. The committee creates space for educators to be heard and included in long-term planning.

My guest this week is Mr. Paul Bootsma, Policy Coordinator for the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO). We discuss his policy work at the CFFO and how the organization advocates for farmers with both the federal and provincial governments. We also discuss the current issue of waste at some small abbatoirs (slaughter facilities) in Ontario where there seems to be a pattern of excessive condemnation of animal carcasses by provincial inspectors, raising cost for both farmers and abbatoir owners.
