Fortenza Insecticide Introduced to Control Cutworms in Canola

New Seedcare™ product from Syngenta delivers effective control of devastating canola pest
Combines with Helix® Vibrance® seed treatment to deliver broad-spectrum insect management and enhanced crop establishment
Syngenta Canada Inc. is pleased to announce the registration of Fortenza® seed treatment, a new seed-applied insecticide for early-season cutworm control that can be used in conjuction with foliar products as part of canola growers' cutworm management strategy.

Cutworms can be devastating to a canola crop. The pest cuts seedlings off at, or just below, the soil surface. Early-season scouting is critical to determine the presence of cutworms. Once populations exceed threshold levels, damage to the canola crop can be devastating. Early growth-stage control of cutworms is important, as plant damage increases and efficacy of foliar insecticides decreases as cutworms get bigger.

Cutworms tend to be nocturnal so, up until now, the most effective management solution was to spray an insecticide at night to coincide with the highest incidence of feeding. By managing cutworms early with Fortenza, a grower can minimize the need to spray and improve efficiency during a very busy time of the year.

“For canola growers who experience cutworm pressure and want to improve their spectrum of insect control, Fortenza is the ideal addition to their pest management regime,” stated Nathan Klages, Product Lead, Seedcare with Syngenta Canada Inc. “Fortenza with Helix Vibrance enhances crop establishment by controlling two key insect pests, flea beetles and cutworms.”

Fortenza contains the the active ingredient cyantraniliprole, which belongs to the bisamide chemistry group. This is a different chemistry group from those found in many seed care products. The Fortenza and Helix Vibrance combination includes four fungicides and two insecticides. So, in addition to the control of flea beetles and cutworms, this solution also controls a wide range of soil-borne diseases, including Rhizoctonia, Pythium and Fusarium.

Fortenza is only available for purchase on pre-treated canola seed. Growers should speak with their seed provider about Fortenza treated canola seed.

It’s Time To Simplify Your Grain Marketing

Video: It’s Time To Simplify Your Grain Marketing

Ag commodity marketing is too complex, largely misunderstood, and the industry is full of products and services you probably don’t even need to profitably market your grain. That truth bomb — along with many more — is courtesy of Joe Vaclavik of Standard Grain. Mr. Vaclavik, a former grain trader turned commodity marketing commentator, says there are only three things a farmer needs to be profitable. Conversely, there are nine things almost no farmer EVER needs to use, including options trading, long range weather prognosticators, and exotic grain marketing contracts. Joe keeps it simple. And blunt. If you’re thin-skinned, don’t tune into this episode. For the rest of you in Ag, enjoy!
