Gluesenkamp Perez Celebrates Opening of the Southwest Washington Grain Project

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez spoke at the ribbon cutting for a new grain storage and loading facility at the Port of Chehalis. This project marks a major expansion for the Port in its capacity to store and ship grain. This new facility will dramatically increase market access for our farmers and ensure they are able to continue the important work of feeding our country.

The Port of Chehalis Grain Terminal & Transload Facility consists of several new storage silos as well as terminals for loading grain onto trucks and trains. Until now, farmers in Lewis County have had their growing capacity limited by their ability to reach buyers and keep their produce competitive on the market. This project will close that gap and allow growers to more than double their grain output.

Funding for this project was provided in part by funding secured by Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez. In total, the Congresswoman was able to bring home roughly $4.12 million dollars for this project.

“At a time when we’re all worried about farm closures, downsizing, and the risk of losing tracks of heritage farmland, I’m proud to see the Port working to support the people who drive our local farm economy,” said Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez, “They say behind every plate of food is a farmer with a fresh sunburn. These are people who have done the generational work of building prosperous land – It’s critical we invest back into them too.”

With the completion of this project, farmers in Southwest Washington have the opportunity to expand their businesses and access new markets across the country. Rep Gluesenkamp Perez is thrilled to see local farms and farm supporting industries thrive.
