Co-op Week initiative helps families with children receiving medical care
Hensall Co-op is recognizing Co-op Week 2026 by launching a community-focused initiative designed to support rural families facing medical challenges. The program, called Farm Families Feeding Families, highlights the important role farm families play in providing food while also helping families who are caring for children undergoing medical treatment.
As part of the initiative, Hensall Co-op has committed more than $5,000 to Ronald McDonald House Southwestern Ontario in London, Ontario. The contribution reflects the co-operative's commitment to supporting the communities and families connected to agriculture.
For many families living in rural areas, accessing specialized healthcare can be difficult. Medical treatment often requires long-distance travel and extended stays away from home. These challenges can place emotional and financial pressure on families, especially when they are focused on caring for a sick child.
Ronald McDonald House in Southwestern Ontario provides accommodations and support services that help families stay close to their children during hospital treatment. By offering a safe and welcoming place to stay, the organization helps reduce some of the stress associated with long hospital visits and travel.
Hensall Co-op believes supporting rural families is an important extension of its mission as a farmer-owned co-operative. The organization serves agricultural communities and understands the value of helping people during difficult times. Through this initiative, the co-operative aims to strengthen community connections while demonstrating the caring spirit that co-operatives are known for.
According to Hensall Co-op leadership, being a co-operative means more than simply conducting business. It also involves working together, supporting communities, and helping people when they need assistance. The Farm Families Feeding Families initiative reflects these values by bringing agricultural communities together in support of families facing healthcare challenges.
"Being a co-operative means more than doing business together. It means supporting one another and strengthening the communities we call home," said Brad Chandler, CEO of Hensall Co-op. "Our farm families work hard every day to help feed families across Canada and around the world. Through Farm Families Feeding Families, we're proud to extend that commitment beyond the farm and support families during some of their most challenging moments.
A key part of the program includes volunteer opportunities for members, customers, and employees. Hensall Co-op will fund special Dinner Group Volunteer Experiences at Ronald McDonald House in Southwestern Ontario. These events will allow volunteers to contribute directly to the well-being of families staying at the facility.
During the volunteer experiences, participants will visit the Ronald McDonald House, learn about its services, and work with the Wellness and Nutrition team. Together, they will prepare meals for families who are staying near their children while receiving medical care. Providing meals can help families focus on what matters most while reducing some of their daily responsibilities.
The initiative also highlights the connection between agriculture and community support. Farm families work hard every day to produce food that helps nourish people across Canada and around the world. Through this program, that same commitment to caring for others is extended beyond the farm and into communities where support is needed most.
Co-op Week is an opportunity for co-operatives to celebrate values such as cooperation, community involvement, and mutual support. Hensall Co-op's initiative demonstrates how agricultural organizations can play an active role in improving the lives of individuals and families beyond their traditional business activities.
The Farm Families Feeding Families program is expected to build stronger relationships between agricultural communities and charitable organizations while creating meaningful volunteer experiences. It also provides an opportunity for people within the agriculture sector to come together and make a positive impact on the lives of others.
By combining financial support with hands-on volunteer involvement, Hensall Co-op hopes to make a lasting difference for families facing some of life's toughest circumstances. The initiative serves as a reminder that strong communities are built through cooperation, compassion, and a willingness to help those in need.
As Co-op Week 2026 is celebrated, October 11 to October 17, 2026, the program showcases how the agriculture industry can support families both on and off the farm. Through donations, volunteer efforts, and community engagement, Hensall Co-op is helping ensure that rural families receive support when they need it most.
