Hog Market Update

There's still great opportunities with forward hog contract prices.

Tyler Fulton is with Hams Marketing Services.

"The futures market shows some signs of being toppy, meaning that we're still right at near contract highs...That translates into forward prices, that in the near term, there's some producers that can expect to break the $300 a pig mark fairly easily. It's a pretty good scenario to be in, profitability remains really good."

Fulton notes U.S. cash prices continue to be firm in the short-term.

"We saw U.S. cash prices rally up to the highest levels that we've seen in seven years. It's driven really by good, strong demand, both domestic and export side and numbers that probably were underwhelming, relative to expectations. We're still dealing with significantly more supplies than we did last year."
