Just start chatting — it’s what the ag world does best

Being nervous to talk to someone new is part of the human condition — which means everyone feels it, too.

Events like field days, conferences, shows and tours play an important role in the agricultural system, particularly for the next generation.

They provide an opportunity to meet new people, interact with researchers, farmers and agronomists as well as engage with new information, demonstrations and see the various strategies and equipment being used in different places.

But heading to one of these events by yourself can sometimes feel like the first day of school where you don’t know anything or anyone. It’s a daunting scenario.

Here are some tips from my own experience on how to use the casual feel of field days to chat with someone new and grow your personal ag network.

When I began attending field days two years ago — when I started in this journalism role — I was in the same position. Particularly because I was coming in with very basic knowledge while everyone else were researchers, students and producers who have been immersed in this industry for years.
