Partnership aims to advance smart automation for specialty crop farming.DESCRIPTION:

Kubota Corporation has made a strategic investment in Agtonomy, a United States–based startup focused on developing automation systems for precision agriculture. This move strengthens their ongoing partnership and supports the growth of smart farming solutions for specialty crops.

Kubota and Agtonomy began working together in 2024, aiming to bring advanced automation technologies into real farming operations. Their collaboration focuses on improving agricultural machinery by combining reliable equipment with modern automation and data systems. The recent investment is intended to speed up innovation and bring these solutions to more farmers.

Specialty crops such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts are mainly grown in California, Oregon, and Washington. These regions are among the most productive agricultural areas in the country.

However, farmers in these areas face several challenges, including increasing input costs, labor shortages, and rising workforce expenses. These issues have created a strong demand for efficient and sustainable farming practices.

Agtonomy specializes in physical artificial intelligence technology designed for specialty crop farming. The company works closely with growers and uses their feedback to develop tools that improve the precision and productivity of daily farm operations.

Its automation platforms are designed to support tasks that save time, reduce labor pressure, and improve consistency in the field.

Kubota has demonstrated how automation can be safely and effectively used in real agricultural settings. Agtonomy’s services have been introduced commercially across western US states through Kubota’s machinery dealer network.

Video: Democratizing Gene Editing - Pairwise’s Vision for the Future of Agriculture

Pairwise has built its business around an idea that runs counter to how many companies approach innovation: make transformative technology easier to access.

In this Seed World interview, CEO Tom Adams discusses why broader access to gene editing could speed crop improvement, expand innovation opportunities and help agriculture address emerging challenges. He explains why Pairwise believes no single company can solve all of agriculture's problems alone—and why making advanced breeding technologies available to more organizations could accelerate progress across the industry.

The conversation explores how consumer trust influences technology adoption, why innovations like pitless cherries and seedless blackberries matter beyond convenience, and how future crop improvements could help address labor shortages, automation, harvest efficiency and other production challenges. Adams also shares his perspective on what the industry may be underestimating about the next wave of gene editing innovation.

Watch the full interview to hear why Pairwise believes agriculture is approaching an important inflection point for gene editing, and why the pace of innovation over the next decade could surprise the industry.
