Potato Growers Could See Record Yields This Year

The province's potato harvest is coming to a close.

Vikram Bisht with Manitoba Agriculture estimates progress at over 95 per cent complete.

He says this year's crop is looking very good, despite the dry start to the season.

"Towards the end we had some rain and almost all the processors have irrigation," explained Bisht. "We will probably have as a good a year as last year when we had the record yields. This year we feel that some of the growers would overtake the yields that they got from last year."

The bin build is up against it now. We've run out of room in the old system using the old dryer. The new dryer and new bins are not yet ready to use. Harvest holdups usually include weather and breakdowns, but this time we're sitting idle because we just have no place to go with our crop. And the harvest we have done has been really inefficient with no grain cart!
