Progress for Corn Crops Moving Well

Corn crops in Manitoba are moving along well, with good seeding progress, emergence, and growth so far.

Manitoba Corn Growers Association field agronomist Morgan Cott says corn crops really benefited from the recent rain, as some crops have grown significantly following the precipitation.

Cott says at this time of the growing season, it's very important for farmers to be scouting their fields for insects.

"I've heard of some (producers) that are having to spray for cutworms, so right now is a really good time to be looking for the damage because you'll be able to see clipped plants very easily. And it's spotty, it just depends on your luck, basically, where the cutworms are if they are an issue," she says. "I don't think it's been an overwhelming problem, but I know there have been a couple guys that have had to spray when they've never had to spray for them before."

Video: Triticale: The Comeback Kid

Presented by Joanna Follings, Cereals Specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA).

Joanna explores triticale’s potential as a high-yielding forage crop, with a focus on agronomic management practices to optimize performance in livestock systems. Comparisons with other cereals and strategies for integration into double-cropping systems are also discussed.

The purpose of the Forage Focus conference is to bring fresh ideas and new research results to Ontario forage producers across the ruminant livestock and commercial hay sectors.
