Québec announces new agriculture minister

Québec’s new minister of agriculture, fisheries and food is Donald Martel (Nicolet-Bécancour). The 61-year-old, holder of a bachelor’s degree in administration, replaces long-time veteran minister André Lamontagne who has been in the role since October 2018.  The cabinet changes were announced prior to a provincial election that’s slated for no later than October 5, 2026.

The Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) has congratulated Martel on his appointment. The farm association has highlighted the need to enhance food security in view of the U.S. tariff war and trade tensions with China.

Lamontagne will not be running for future office. He was a steadfast champion for the Office of the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct which will come into effect January 1, 2026.
