SHIC Applauds Ramped-Up USDA APHIS ASF Outreach

The Swine Health Information Center is applauding the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's ramped up African Swine Fever Outreach.

In response to the detection of African Swine Fever in the Caribbean in 2021, USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service launched several new initiatives to protect U.S. swine from the transboundary disease.

Dr. Paul Sundberg, the Executive Director of the Swine Health Information Center and a member of the Swine Innovation Porc Coordinated African Swine Fever Research Working Group, says one of those initiatives, the APHIS Protect Our Pigs awareness campaign and website provides information and resources to help safeguard the pork industry.

Clip-Dr. Paul Sundberg-Swine Health Information Center:
APHIS recognizes that the stakeholders on the farms are the first line of defense against ASF.

It's not the sole responsibility of USDA, of Customs and Border Protection, of the states or of the industry but everybody has to work together.
So, APHIS offering this Protect Our Pigs awareness campaign that helps to support commercial producers, veterinarians, pig owners in providing them information and awareness as well.

This is especially pointed at the instructional videos and sharable information and the biosecurity guides that can be shared with the small and medium, producers that may not have that ongoing, regular and usual connection to health with their veterinarian.

If they can help us with getting to that audience of producers, they will also help in preventing ASF introduction into the country.
