Trump Backs Data Centers as Economic Engine, But Farmers Warn of Prime Farmland Loss

Trump promotes data centres as a path to economic growth while farmers question the impact on agricultural land, water resources, and rural communities.

President Donald Trump has delivered one of his strongest endorsements yet of data centre development, arguing that communities rejecting the projects risk missing out on economic growth, jobs, and tax revenue. The remarks arrive as opposition to large-scale data centre construction continues to grow in many rural areas across the United States.

In a post on Truth Social on August 31, Trump said communities that do not welcome data centres could become “backwards and poor,” while those that embrace them stand to benefit from economic opportunity and lower taxes. He also argued that resistance to data centre expansion could weaken America’s competitive position in the global race for artificial intelligence development, particularly against China.

The President’s comments underscore how critical data centres have become to the future of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital services. Major technology companies continue investing billions of dollars in new facilities across the country, often targeting rural regions where large parcels of land, electrical infrastructure, and development opportunities are readily available.

While Trump highlights the economic upside, many farmers and rural residents see a more complicated picture.

Agricultural groups have increasingly raised concerns about the location of many proposed data centres. Developers frequently seek agricultural land because it is relatively flat, accessible, and easier to prepare for construction.

Once converted to industrial use, however, farmland rarely returns to agricultural production. The loss becomes even more significant when projects are built on some of the nation’s most productive soils.

The issue extends beyond acreage alone. Farmland values can rise sharply when data centre developers enter a region, making it more difficult for young farmers and expanding operations to acquire land. Rural communities may face difficult decisions as they balance long-term food production with immediate economic development opportunities.

Water and energy demands have also become central concerns. Modern data centres require substantial electricity to power servers and cooling systems. Some facilities also consume significant volumes of water to maintain operating temperatures. Critics argue that these demands can place additional pressure on local utilities, electrical grids, and water supplies already relied upon by agricultural producers.

Supporters contend that data centres can deliver meaningful benefits to rural economies. Construction projects create jobs, infrastructure investments, and new tax revenue streams that can support schools, roads, and local services. In some regions, community leaders view data centres as an opportunity to diversify local economies while attracting additional technology-related investment.

This tension reflects a growing national debate over how America should accommodate the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Data centres are becoming essential components of the digital economy, but their footprint is increasingly visible in agricultural regions that have traditionally been dedicated to food production.

For farmers, the question is not whether data centres are important. Modern agriculture itself depends heavily on cloud computing, precision agriculture platforms, satellite imagery, data analytics, and artificial intelligence tools. The challenge is determining where and how these facilities should be built without sacrificing productive farmland that future generations may need.

Trump’s latest comments are likely to further intensify the discussion. As states, counties, and municipalities consider new proposals, community leaders will continue weighing two competing priorities: capturing the economic promise of the AI boom while protecting the agricultural resources that support rural America. The outcome could shape both the future of farming and the future of technology development for decades to come.

The Clean Air Act’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program requires transportation fuel sold in the United States to contain a minimum volume of renewable fuels such as ethanol, biodiesel, or advanced biofuels. Established by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and later expanded by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the RFS is implemented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in collaboration with the Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

This webinar provides an overview of the legal authority and structure for the RFS program and explain how it works, including the program’s system of Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) and categories of renewable fuels. Additionally, this webinar addresses EPA annual volume requirement rulemaking and associated recent legal issues.
