USDA Announces Historic $125 Million Annual Investment in Agricultural Research Infrastructure

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a historic $125 million annual investment in agricultural research infrastructure, a move aimed at modernizing research facilities across America and strengthening the future of agricultural innovation. The funding opportunity, announced by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, is expected to help address decades of deferred maintenance while equipping research institutions with the tools needed to tackle emerging challenges facing food and livestock production.

The investment will be distributed through the USDA’s Research Facilities Act program, providing land-grant universities and agricultural research institutions with resources to upgrade laboratories, research centers, and other critical infrastructure that support scientific discovery and producer-focused innovation. According to USDA, the goal is to ensure future agricultural research is conducted in modern facilities capable of supporting advanced technologies and next-generation agricultural solutions.

For the swine industry, investments in research infrastructure could have far-reaching implications. Modern research facilities play a critical role in advancing animal health, disease prevention, genetics, nutrition, biosecurity, environmental management, and production efficiency. As producers continue to face challenges ranging from foreign animal disease threats to labor shortages and rising production costs, access to cutting-edge research remains essential for maintaining competitiveness.

The announcement also aligns with USDA’s broader 2026 research priorities, which emphasize improving producer profitability, expanding market opportunities, strengthening protection against pests and diseases, and advancing technologies that improve efficiency and sustainability. These focus areas closely mirror many of the challenges currently facing pork producers across North America.
