Western Canadian Wheat Growers Call For More Action From The Federal Government

There’s a growing concern in the ag sector about the Federal Government’s lack of action on China’s decision to revoke Canadian Canola export permits from Richardson International and now Viterra.

Jim Wickett farms in the Rosetown area and is Chair of the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association.

“We need a Federal Government to engage on this, these guys are asleep at the switch. I mean there’s problems, we need Ministers on a plane, maybe even the Prime Minister to go over there. This is an $8 Billion dollar industry. You know we’ve seen literally nothing come out of the Federal Government…it’s time they got board.”

Wickett says they’ve also been hearing reports of other import companies in China looking at the risk and the possibility of putting the brakes on other Canadian Agricultural imports on things like wheat, peas and flax.

So far, there’s been no official word from the Chinese Government on that.
