Weyburn-area family wins $30,000 shop renovation

Weyburn-area family wins $30,000 shop renovation The Nikolejsin family is planning to boost the comfort and productivity level at the family homestead with a much-needed addition MISSISSAUGA, ON - August 4, 2021 - The winner of the $30,000 Let’s Talk Shop contest from FMC plans to make some upgrades to their original family homestead north of Weyburn, SK so it’s a more productive place to work.

Dean Nikolejsin entered the Let’s Talk Shop contest last winter. He farms 8,000 acres of hard red spring wheat, canola, red lentils, canary seed and barley with his wife, Kari, and two sons, Rhett and Ty. All of them entered the contest but it was Dean who was the lucky winner.

“I read about the contest and kind of felt motivated to enter,” he says. “I never dreamed that I’d actually win.”

Once they got over the shock of winning, Dean and his family sat down to hash out how they’d spend the money. The contest was meant to support the farm business with either a shop or kitchen renovation. Since they all commute in to work at the home farm, near Cedoux, they decided the shop could use an upgrade.

“We know a lot of business gets done either in the main shop or around the kitchen table,” says Krista Henry, marketing communications manager at FMC. “We’re thrilled that a family like the Nikolejsins gets to enjoy this prize. We can’t wait to follow their project to see how it turns out.”

The farm is the old homestead where Dean’s father was born. The property has equipment sheds and a shop. The Nikolejsins park a trailer on the property in the summer so they have somewhere to meet but the homestead doesn’t even have running water where they can wash their hands properly.

“When you hear you won $30,000, your mind goes in a thousand different directions,” Dean says, describing what happened when he got the good news. “We’d like to add a lunchroom and office outside the shop, somewhere we can get away to clean up and work at a desk.”
