Wheat is a grass similar to corn. Wheat has a primary tiller, which is why we plant high populations of wheat, so we can get as many of those tillers as possible. We also look for fall and spring tillers — secondary tillers that provide additional yield. If wheat is questionable or was planted late in the season, scouting will indicate whether additional nitrogen is needed.
