USDA funds enhance Ag studies for Hispanic students

The USDA has announced a significant $15 million investment aimed at strengthening agricultural education at Hispanic-serving institutions. This initiative, revealed as Hispanic Heritage Month draws to a close, targets enhancing the representation of Hispanic students in the agricultural sector.

The funding, administered by USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), will support various projects designed to prepare students for successful careers in agriculture, emphasizing the need for diversity in the STEM workforce.

Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small expressed pride in supporting initiatives that offer practical training and educational opportunities to Hispanic students.

Projects funded through this investment will focus on various aspects of agricultural education, including improving academic offerings and expanding career pathways in the food and agriculture industries.

For example, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will develop inclusive training models in organic agriculture, aiming to correct misconceptions about agricultural careers among first-generation Hispanic students.

Additional initiatives include leadership and advocacy training programs at Metropolitan State University of Denver, which will help minority students become leaders in nutrition and dietetics. These efforts reflect the USDA’s commitment to fostering a diverse and well-prepared agricultural workforce that mirrors the nation's demographic makeup.

By supporting Hispanic-serving institutions, the USDA is not only promoting educational equity but also enhancing the capabilities of future agricultural leaders. This strategic focus on diversity and education aims to create a more inclusive and efficient agricultural system that benefits everyone in the nation.
