The 16th president of the United States created the federal ag department.

On May 15, 1862, Lincoln signed a bill establishing the USDA. He appointed Isaac Newton as the first commissioner of agriculture.

Lincoln also signed the Homestead Act and the Morrill Land Grant College Act into law. Both pieces of legislation created more farmland for producers.
