Canada’s reputation for high-quality cereals continues with exports to more than 80 countries.
Canada’s cereals sector continued to demonstrate resilience, innovation, and global competitiveness throughout 2025, according to the latest annual report released by Cereals Canada.
The report highlights a year marked by robust export performance, expanded market reach, and strengthened technical leadership that reinforced Canada’s position as a trusted global supplier of wheat, durum, oats, and barley.
Canadian cereal exports reached approximately $12.8 billion annually, with shipments to more than 80 countries worldwide. This sustained trade volume reflects continued global confidence in Canadian grain quality, consistency, and reliability, even amid increasingly competitive international markets.
Global trust driven by quality and consistency
A central theme of the 2025 report is the importance of maintaining Canada’s reputation for high-quality cereals. Cereals Canada emphasized its ongoing efforts to ensure that quality at the farm level translates into measurable value across the entire supply chain.
“Cereals Canada plays an important role, ensuring that Canadian quality translates into value,” said Brett Halstead, chair of Cereals Canada. “The continued success of Canada’s cereals sector reflects the commitment of farmers, exporters, processors, researchers, life science companies, and industry partners who invest in innovation and market development.”
Through coordinated programming, technical support, and direct engagement with international customers, the organization worked to help buyers better understand and optimize the performance of Canadian cereals in milling, processing, and end-use applications.
Market development and customer engagement remain key priorities
In 2025, Cereals Canada continued to prioritize market development and proactive engagement with global customers. Targeted programming and outreach initiatives helped strengthen relationships with key buyers while supporting demand growth in both established and emerging markets.
The organization also remained focused on addressing market access challenges, which have become increasingly important in a complex and uncertain global trade environment.
“In an increasingly competitive and uncertain global trading environment, maintaining strong customer relationships and addressing market access challenges remains essential,” said Dean Dias, chief executive officer of Cereals Canada. “The work of our team helped ensure Canadian cereals continued to be recognized and trusted worldwide for their quality, consistency, and performance.”
Technical excellence underpins global competitiveness
Technical leadership remained a cornerstone of Cereals Canada’s work in 2025. One of the year’s key milestones was the release of the annual New Wheat Crop Report in November, which provides detailed insights into milling performance, flour and semolina quality, and overall functionality of Canadian wheat.
Canada produced 36.6 million tonnes of wheat in 2025, with the majority grading No. 1 or No. 2. This high grading standard continues to distinguish Canadian wheat in international markets, particularly for buyers seeking strong protein content and reliable processing characteristics.
By providing transparent, science-based data, Cereals Canada supports informed purchasing decisions and reinforces confidence among global customers.
Expanded assessment strengthens national quality data
Another major development in 2025 was the expansion of the Harvest Assessment Program to include Eastern Canadian wheat classes. This milestone was achieved through a partnership with Grain Farmers of Ontario and represents a significant step toward delivering a more comprehensive national picture of wheat quality.
The expanded assessment program enhances Canada’s ability to provide consistent, regionally inclusive data to international buyers, further strengthening the country’s competitive advantage in global grain markets.
Outlook: sustaining leadership in a competitive landscape
As global demand for high-quality cereals continues to grow, Cereals Canada’s 2025 report highlights the importance of ongoing investment in innovation, research, and market development. The organization’s work supporting exporters, engaging customers, and advancing technical expertise will remain critical in navigating trade uncertainties and maintaining Canada’s leadership position.
Cereals Canada says that with strong collaboration across the value chain, Canada’s cereals sector is well positioned to build on its 2025 performance and continue delivering value to customers worldwide.
