What comes to mind when you think of agriculture in Texas? Is it livestock grazing in a field? A tractor lit up by the sunlight or a farmer tending to his animals?

Whatever it is, the Texas Department of Agriculture is encouraging teenagers between 13 and 17, as well as kids under 12 years old to submit pictures that illustrate the ways agriculture touches their everyday lives.

Texas Commissioner of Agriculture Sid Miller sees this contest as a way to engage the younger generations and spark an interest in agriculture.

"The greatest natural resource we have in this state is our youth,” Commissioner Miller said. “With only six percent of our farmers and ranchers under the age of 35, now more than ever, it is imperative that we support this critical segment of agriculture, because Texas agriculture matters.”

There are three categories to show why Texas Agriculture Matters:

Farm Fresh Food: The pictures should show how food impacts daily life. Examples include pictures of inspirational food and pictures of people who grow, raise and process the food.

Fascinating Fiber: Show the importance of fiber in daily life. Examples include pictures of bed sheets, clothes and where fiber can be found.

Sensational Selfies: Get creative and send the best selfies depicting anything agricultural. From a favorite meal to a favorite piece of farm equipment, use the pictures to say why Texas agriculture matters.

Applicants are allowed to send up to three photos per category. The winners will be featured in the Food and Fiber Pavilion at the Texas State Fair. The top photos will be showcased at the TDA’s headquarters in Austin.

The deadline for photos is Tuesday, September 1st, 2015.
