Millborn Seeds, Inc., a family-owned company with over 37 years of experience in the seed industry, has announced its acquisition of Kaste Seed, a well-known specialty seed business based near Fertile, Minnesota.

Millborn Seeds specializes in providing over 1,200 seed varieties to farmers, ranchers, and landowners across North America. This acquisition strengthens Millborn’s integrated seed supply chain, which focuses on high-quality seed solutions.

Kaste Seed has built a strong reputation in the industry for its production of native grass and wildflower seeds, known for their exceptional quality. “My father Paul, my wife Colleen, and myself are happy to be handing our business off to the Millborn organization. The three of us aren’t getting any younger and it’s time for an infusion of energy and vision. We know that they will uphold our reputation within the seed trade and provide a great place to work for our employees,” said Garth Kaste, President of Kaste Seed.

This acquisition also aligns with Millborn's broader expansion strategy, which includes the recent purchase of Union Forage in Calgary, Alberta. By adding Kaste Seed to its operations, Millborn will enhance its reclamation seed offerings to customers in both the United States and Canada.

“Millborn’s goal is to create an integrated supply chain and provide the highest quality seed products for our customers. We often find a connection with family-owned seed businesses because we know how proud they are of the legacy they’ve created, and we’re committed to upholding that,” said Matt Fenske, Owner and CEO of Millborn Seeds. “We are excited that Garth and his team will stay on to ensure a smooth transition for everyone we work with.”

Kaste Seed will begin operating as a Millborn location by late 2024, with current team members continuing in their roles. For more details visit their website at https://www.millbornseeds.com/.

Video: Accuracy in testing for DON

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin naturally produced by the fungus that causes Gibberella ear rot in corn. Infection occurs through the corn silk channel when ideal temperatures (approx. 27°C) and higher humidity are present. Cool wet conditions after pollination favour continual disease development and determines the level of infection. Effective sampling, detection, and quantification of DON are challenging due to its uneven distribution on the ear as well as its presence across the field, resulting in infected and non-infected kernels in the same grain sample.
