Ontario Farmer Continues his Fight for Raw Milk

Schmidt Wins Raw Milk Appeal

By , Farms.com

An Ontario dairy farmer - most famous for his crusade to sell raw milk has won the right to appeal his 13 convictions.  On Thursday July 26 the Ontario Court of Appeal granted Michael Schmidt the right to appeal his previous convictions including probation and a fine of $9,150 for operating without a licence to sell milk.

Schmidt has been fighting his cause for almost three years from when he was first found guilty of producing and distributing unpasteurized milk. The unpasteurized milk was distributed through a cow-share program, whereby consumers would purchase shares of a dairy cow, which would produce milk for their consumption.

The debate over the health implications relating to unpasteurized milk continues. To this date, it’s illegal to sell or distribute unpasteurized milk in Canada.

Getting closer to planting season means one thing… it’s time to get EVERYTHING ready.

Today didn’t go exactly as planned—we thought we’d be hauling potatoes again, but instead we spent the day digging equipment out of the cellar, hooking up the grain drill, and getting tractors ready to roll. With wheat planting just around the corner, every piece of equipment matters.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a normal day without a few problems… dead batteries, hydraulic issues, and a truck tire that absolutely refused to cooperate. We tried everything—jump packs, bead bazooka, ratchet straps… and eventually had to bring out the “big guns” just to get things moving again.

But that’s farm life—adapt, fix, and keep moving forward.

We’re getting close to go-time. Wheat seed is coming soon, and planting season is right around the corner
