A license isn’t required even if the equipment is on public roads

Farms.com takes its tour of licensing and insurance prerequisites for farm equipment to The Prairie State – Illinois.

Is a license required to operate farm equipment in Illinois?

Farmers and ag equipment operators in Illinois don’t need a license to drive the equipment whether on private property or public roads, but the operator must be at least 15 years of age.

This differs from jurisdictions like Iowa, which requires a Class C license if the equipment is on public roads and traveling further than 2 miles from the farm.

Under certain conditions, however, anyone operating a fertilizer “floater” may be required to have a valid license. Operators should check with the Department of Transportation or local authorities for clarification.

In Illinois, anyone aged 16 or older can operate farm equipment at any time.

14- and 15-year-olds can operate ag machinery once they’ve completed a 4-H or similar ag safety certification course.

Is insurance mandatory for farm equipment in Illinois?

Insurance isn’t a mandatory requirement for farm machinery in Illinois.

This aligns with rules in other states like North Carolina.

Insurance is, however, highly recommended for farmers to protect themselves from potential liability and damage.

In addition, lenders like Farm Credit Illinois and Eureka Savings Bank may require proof of insurance as a prerequisite to secure equipment financing.

Insurance providers like Western Illinois Mutual Insurance Company  and Diamond Bros. Insurance are available to help farmers develop complete insurance plans to protect various assets including homes and equipment.

And because each farm is unique, producers are encouraged to contact providers directly to begin creating the right insurance plan for their individual farms.
