How to avoid slips in snowy conditions

Winter brings slippery conditions, increasing the likelihood of injuries on the farm from slips, trips, and falls. Emergency rooms regularly see farm workers get injured annually from winter accidents.

Surprisingly, up to 66% of these incidents happen on level ground, not from heights, making winter even more dangerous. On farm, it is important to prevent these accidents, to be extra vigilant and take greater precaution in the months ahead.

Those who work on a farm should take the following steps to avoid slips and falls during winter :

  • Walk slowly and deliberately, focusing on your path.

  • Avoid slippery surfaces like ice, wet leaves, and snowbanks.

  • Wear slip-resistant footwear.  Ice grippers can provide added traction.

  • When you come indoors, remove your wet outdoor footwear and change to indoor footwear.

  • Use handrails when available and check that entrance areas are clear of snow and slush.

  • Clean footwear upon entering indoor spaces to remove ice and snow.

  • Address any slip, trip, or fall hazards as soon as you seem them.

  • Use salt, sand, or other materials to prevent slipping.

  • If you are working outdoors, ensure you have proper footwear for the weather.

  • Ensure good lighting and clearly marked walkways for those long trips to the livestock barn in the dark.

  • Maintain indoor safety by cleaning up spills promptly and securing mats.

Remember to ensure that everyone who works on the farm remains vigilant throughout the winter to ensure safety. By taking these precautions, you can minimize the risk of falls and injuries on the farm.
