Endowed Position Strengthens Swine Education and Supports Future Agricultural Research Nationwide

South Dakota State University is creating the Rick Wahlstrom Endowed Chair in Swine Production to recognize the longtime professor’s contributions to swine research, education, and agricultural leadership. University officials said the new position will strengthen research programs and improve swine education opportunities for future students and faculty members.

Rick Wahlstrom dedicated 36 years to SDSU after joining the university in 1952. During his career, he became known for his work in swine nutrition, student mentorship, and animal science research. He retired in 1988 and passed away in 2023 just before reaching his 100th birthday.

Throughout his years at SDSU, Wahlstrom earned recognition for both research and teaching excellence. He received the college’s Teacher of the Year award three times during his career and published hundreds of research papers, reports, and educational materials related to swine production and agriculture. He also helped establish the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity chapter at SDSU and remained active in university and community activities with his wife, LaRayne.

Former student Bob Thaler reflected on Wahlstrom’s influence on the agriculture industry and university programs.

“Incredible human being,” Thaler said. “He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Came to SDSU. He was the first Distinguished Professor in the entire South Dakota regental system — incredible gentleman. He valued, greatly, teaching, and he valued research.”

University leaders said the endowed chair will help SDSU recruit and retain talented faculty members focused on swine production, research innovation, and student development. Officials expect to appoint the first faculty member to the position during the 2026-27 academic year.

Support for the endowment came from family members, agriculture organizations, and industry supporters, who believe the new chair will continue advancing swine research and agricultural education across South Dakota for many years.
