Before Harvest, Every Alberta Farm Family Should Have This Conversation

Forget trying to predict markets. ATB Financial’s Rob Jensen says the farms that thrive are the ones with a long-term plan and the flexibility to adjust when conditions change.

The conversations happening around Alberta kitchen tables are changing.

For the first time in his career, ATB Financial crop sector expert Rob Jensen says he’s hearing something he never expected from some of the province’s strongest farm businesses: they’re asking about selling land.

Not because they’re in trouble. And not because they’re actually listing it for sale. But because they’re running the numbers.

“These are our growing producers that have always been the ones shopping to expand their operations,” Jensen says.

That doesn’t mean Alberta’s farmland market is about to turn upside down. Jensen is quick to caution against reading too much into a handful of conversations. Still, after spending years working alongside producers across southern Alberta, he believes those discussions signal something important beneath the surface.
