CGC Repeals Proposed Grain Grading Changes

The Wheat Growers are very pleased with today’s announcement by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) that the proposed changes to the export grade standards on wheat delivered to country elevators are being repealed.

“The majority of the farmers on the CGC Western Standards Committee were opposed to these changes. These are the farmers that represent the many prairie farmers who would be negatively impacted by the proposed changes,” stated Daryl Fransoo, Chair.

The Wheat Growers and the National Farmers Union (NFU) released a joint statement on July 26 asking that the Minister of Agriculture and Agri Food Canada, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, stop the changes.

Agriculture is a key economic driver for Canada. Placing domestic roadblocks that potentially reduce farmer income is not in anyone’s best interest.

“We’re pleased with the fast response to our appeal to Min. MacAulay and the CGC’s acknowledgement that this was opposed by the majority of Canadian farmers,” closed Fransoo.
