Cow-Calf Producers Invited To Learn About Genetic Selection And Genomics

By Russ Euken, Sherry Hoyer

There has been much progress in beef cattle genetics and genetic tools recently, and livestock specialists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach have planned a series of meetings where they will share information about making genetic improvements to herds. Russ Euken, extension livestock specialist, said cow-calf producers can attend any of four meetings scheduled in north central and eastern Iowa. There’s no fee to attend, but preregistration is required to reserve a meal.

“Applying selection indexes and genomic tools will be presented by Pat Wall, extension beef specialist from southeast Iowa,” Euken said. “Representatives from Zoetis will describe their available genetic testing tools and how they can be used in conjunction with vaccination strategies.”

Extension beef specialist Patrick Gunn will explain the economics of raising or buying replacement heifers, and talk about synchronization programs for artificial insemination. His colleagues will present information on alternative cow calf systems including grazing and confined or drylot production.
