Growing the Next Generation of Farm Managers

Building a successful farm today requires more than production expertise. Business management, leadership, advocacy and strong industry connections are becoming just as important for the next generation of producers.

That’s the thinking behind Canada’s Young Farmers, a new national initiative launched by Farm Management Canada to help producers under 40 strengthen their business skills, build leadership capacity, and connect with peers from across the country.

According to a recent press release, the initiative was officially launched during Farm Management Canada’s Annual General Meeting following months of consultation with young farmers, provincial organizations, and national industry partners. Those discussions highlighted a common need for greater national collaboration while respecting the work already being done by regional and commodity groups.

“Farmers are the backbone of Canada’s agricultural industry, and young farmers are the future — they are the entrepreneurs, innovators, and change-makers that will propel our industry forward,” says Heather Watson, executive director of Farm Management Canada. “We’ve listened to young farmers across the country and are excited to work together to provide a national gathering space and dedicated programming and development opportunities.”

The initiative will focus on helping young producers develop the skills needed to build resilient farm businesses and become leaders within their operations and the broader industry. Programming will include professional development, mentorship, networking, and learning opportunities centred on priorities identified by young farmers, including farm financial literacy, risk management, business planning, farm transition, governance, communications, and advocacy.
