Learn How To Turn On-farm Storage Into Profit During March 10 Grain Marketing Meeting

Farmers can get an update on the 2016 grain market and get ideas on how to achieve a profitable crop during a grain marketing educational meeting March 10.

“With corn and soybean prices trading at values near or below break-even points, it’s important to develop a marketing plan that allows farmers the ability to try and capture potential profits while minimizing risk,” said Sam Custer, an Ohio State University Extension educator who is organizing the program.

OSU Extension is the outreach arm of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University.

“Grain Marketing: Turning On-Farm Storage into a Profit,” will feature remarks from Jon Scheve, a grain merchandiser with Superior Feed Ingredients of Waconia, Minnesota, who will discuss market influences in 2016 and how to prepare for opportunities and challenges, Custer said.

“The workshop will focus on how on-farm storage combined with forward selling, market carry and basis appreciation can provide growers added income,” he said. “Participants will also learn how hedging with futures protects farmers from risk and how options can be a great addition to a farmers' marketing toolbox.”

The workshop will be held at Romer’s Catering, 118 E. Main St. in Greenville. The event is sponsored by OSU Extension, Ohio’s Country Journal, Ohio Ag Net and Merchants Bank of Indiana.

Registration for the workshop, which is free, is required by March 5. Lunch will be provided. The program is limited to the first 100 to register.
