New farm fire detection systems now available in Ontario

Saint-Hyacinthe, Que. – Faulty electrical systems are the leading cause of fire on farms today. And farm fires account for the majority of recorded financial losses in agricultural operations across Canada. Many farm fires are preventable, and PrevTech Innovations Inc. is launching an innovative detection solution for Ontario farmers. Their new Smart Sensor system, installed at the main electrical service, monitors for electrical and thermal anomalies and faults on the farm’s network, 24/7.

Now available in Ontario, PrevTech’s sensor-based early warning solution offers farmers continuous surveillance of their electrical system, complete with detection, warning notifications and situation diagnosis. Farms also have access to their entire electrical network on their mobile phone.

“Farm fires are devastating. There’s so much that can be lost, like barns, animals, equipment, generations of work, and a family’s home and livelihood. We’re proud to offer a solution to prevent any of this from happening,” says Pierre-André Meunier, PrevTech founder and president of the Quebec-based company. “Our systems are proven. The Smart Sensor has successfully prevented and detected electrical faults and on-farm fires in barns across Quebec and we look forward to serving Ontario farmers with the same quality systems, monitoring and diagnostic services.” Watch Meunier describe PrevTech’s Smart Sensor system and demonstrate how the technology works to detect electrical faults on farms here.

The monitoring system can be installed by a farm’s electrician. If an anomaly is detected, a text message or email will be sent to alert the farm owner and/or their electrician. The Smart Sensor system detects problems like non-conforming cabling and configuration, motor degradation and faults, faulty or inadequate ventilation and lighting components, and overheated breaker panels.

“Farms, and livestock barns especially require a lot of electrical wiring, fans and motors. And many of these are exposed to corrosive materials like manure that can cause problems in the electrical network. Our technology monitors these networks to detect and prevent the worst-case scenarios, like fires, as well as faulty equipment and motors that can cause downtime on a farm,” says Dave Clipson, PrevTech Director for Ontario. Watch an Ontario farmer share his experience using PrevTech’s monitoring system and see how the technology detected and diagnosed a common, but serious real farm electrical issue here.
