No Surprise On TPP Pullout Of U-S

On Monday, U-S President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture President Ron Bonnet said everybody expected that this would happen...

Bonnett said,"Well I don't think anyone was too surprised, The campaign rhetoric on TPP was so strong that we expected him to make a decision to pull out of TPP. The only surprise was how fast he decided to do it."

Bonnet said it could be possible for the remaining countries to go ahead with the TPP without the U-S, however they would have to get together and revise the deal.

He notes if the TPP falls through, Canada would need to form bilateral trade deals with countries such as Japan and Vietnam, adding countries like China and India, who were not part of the TPP, would also be valuable trading partners.

The big concern for Canadian agriculture, according to Bonnett, is what President Trump plans to do with the North American Free Trade Agreement.
